Turret - St. Angelo Fort, Kannur

The fort was built in 1505 by Sir Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India, to ward off attacks by the Dutch and British. It is a famous tourist spot. From up there one could look out at the sea that surrounds three sides of this fort. I can just imagine the nervous Portuguese worrying about how and when the wily British would attack. The fort changed hands several times, going down to the Dutch and eventually the British did capture it in 1790 and transformed it into one of their major military stations on the Malabar Coast.
